June got up and they both started laughing. Reg, as usual, just kept on going.
�I�ve got some eye drops in my locker. I��ll go and get them if you want.�
�No. It�s alright. I�ll survive� Jim laughed.
�No, it�s ok. I�ll go and get them now� Reg said and went downstairs.
Jim and June burst out laughing.
�It�s sweet�� June said.
Jim got up to walk over to her. �Yeah. Now, where were we?�
�Jim.�
�What?� He took her in his arms, made sure there was no one around and started kissing her. �Jim.�
�Yeah?�
�Reg will be back in a minute.�
�So?�
�He�ll see us.�
�They�ll find out soon enough. Why not now?�
�Because I want you to myself just now. We�ll tell them when we�re both ready.�
�Ok� Jim sighed. He kissed her again and pulled back when Reg opened the door.
�Here�s the drops. Will I help you with them?�
�No, it�s ok. I�m sure the sarge can help me. Can�t you?� He stared at her lovingly.
�Yeah, it�s ok Reg. We�ll manage� June said.
Reg disappeared and June and Jim walked over to June�s desk where no one can see into the office. The minute they started kissing Reg walked back in, but they never noticed. Reg just stood there and watched them stunned. He then quickly disappeared again without saying a word.
At the end of the shift June was standing at the front desk talking to Matt Boyden and Kerry Young when Jim came down. They looked at each other lovingly but neither Kerry nor Matt noticed.
�Want a lift home sarge?� Jim asked June.
�No it�s alright. I��ll catch the bus.�
�I insist.�
�Ok.�
They left and went to the car park.
�There�s something going on between those two� Kerry said to Matt.
�Don�t be daft. They�ve worked together for 20 years and nothing�s happened. So why now?�
�I suppose. Maybe it�s just me. I�ve had a hard day.�
�Go home and sleep then� Matt ordered.
�Yes sarge!�
�Night.��
�Jim and June?�� he thought out loudly as Kerry left. ��Nah, not possible. Or is it?��
�Do you think they know anything?� June asked Jim as he pulled up to her door.
�No. Want to come in for some coffee. I could do with some company after today.�
�Me too. Yeah, I�d love one.�
They got out of the car and walked to the front door hand in hand. Jim tried to kiss June as she searched for the keys.
�Not out here Jim.�
�Well hurry up and find the keys then.�
Eventually the keys were found and couple walked into the hall.
�Go and put the kettle in while I go and get something.�
After 5 minutes Jim got tired of waiting so went upstairs to find June.
�Where are you hiding?�
�In here� she shouted from the bedroom. She was standing there in only a long t-shirt.
�Took you long enough to find me.�
There was soft romantic music playing in the background and a few candles dotted her and there. �I wish I had come up sooner� Jim said as he examined the room. �You look gorgeous in a t-shirt.�
�Thank you. I bet you do too� she answered taking his jumper off. �Yeah. I was right� she said as they fell onto the bed kissing.
�I love you Jim Carver� June told him as they cuddled up to each other the next morning.
�I love you too June.�
�Oh, my god. It�s half seven. We�re meant to be at work in ten minutes. Someone will notice if we�re both late.�
When they got to the station half an hour later, Matt was standing at the front desk.
�Morning Matt� Jim said as he held the door open for June.
�You�re late.�
�My alarm was on the blink� they said at the same time.
Matt stared at them. �Amazing.�
�What?� June asked hoping he didn��t notice anything.
�Oh nothing. It��s just a coincidence that you came in late at the same time and have the same excuse.�
�Yeah. That�s what we thought when we were in the car park.�
They left Matt and went upstairs.
�That was close� Jim said.
�Yeah too close� June agreed.
Kerry walked into the front room just after Jim and June had left.
�Kerry. You know what you said yesterday about Jim and June?�
�Yes.�
�I think you were right after all.�
�Don�t be daft, sarge.�
�I mean it. They just came in late at the exact same time and had they same lame excuse.�
�Well, well. I wonder who else knows.�
At that moment Reg walked in, big ears as usual.
�Who else knows what?�
�About Jim and June� Matt replied. �We think there�s something going on.�
�Good. I thought I was the only one.�
�What do you mean by that?� Kerry wanted to know curiously.
�Well, first I caught them trying to get something out of Jim�s eye yesterday, so I got my eye drops. I forgot to ask them something when I went in the first time, so I went back in and saw them kissing.�
�Wow. Did they see you?�
�No. I don�t think so.�
�I really didn�t think it was possible� Matt said stunned. �And after so long as well.�
�I have to tell someone� Kerry said.
�No. Don�t yet. Let�s see if we can squeeze it out of them slowly.�
�What do you mean sarge?� Reg asked.
�We keep dropping hints all day and wait and see what happens.�
�Brilliant sarge.�
�Thanks Kerry. Now get back to work and think of some things to do.
�Yes sir� Kerry and Reg answered in unison.
�Have a good night, you two?� Matt asked Jim and June as he walked into CSU.
�Well I don�t know about the sarge, but mine was just a normal night lazing in front of the TV, sarge.�
�Nothing special for me either. Why are you asking Matt?�
�Oh nothing. Just thought that since you both came in late you did something together.�
�No. Jim dropped me off and then went straight home, didn�t you?�
�She�s right sarge. As soon as I got home I went straight into the kitchen and had my dinner. Usual routine. Is something wrong or are you just asking every officer in the station the same thing? Or is it a murder inquiry?�
�Nope just wondering what two of my best friends are up to.�
�Well, now you know.�
�Yeah, have fun tonight then�
Matt said leaving the office.
�What was that for?� June asked Jim.
�I have no idea. Do you think someone saw us?�
�How? No one lives anywhere near my house.�
�True. So what are you doing tonight?�
�Sorry. I��m already meeting someone.�
�Oh?�
�Yes, his name�s PC Jim Carver. Know him?�
�Don�t think so.�
�Well, if you do happen to meet him, tell him to be at my place at seven thirty.�
�Ok. Oh and June� Jim said after making sure there was nobody around.
�Yeah?�
�I love you� and with that kissed her. �I love you too, Jimmy.�
�You�ve not called me that in ages.�
�I know.�
�Hi sarge. Have a good night, last night?� Kerry asked as she saw June walk into an interview room.
�Yes, thanks. Why?�
�Nothing. I just thought that since you�� Oh it doesn�t matter� she said as she tried to tease June into telling her what was going on between her and Jim.
�What Kerry?�
�Nothing. Really.�
�No. Since I what? You��re not getting out of it Kerry.�
� Since you and Jim left together, but it was probably nothing.�
�Kerry, he�s one of my best friends, we only went for a drink after work.�
�That�s not what you told Sgt. Boyden.�
�Who are working for? CID? MIT? So we told a white lie.�
�Auntie June telling a white lie?� Gina Gold said as she came downstairs.
�Ma�am.�
�I thought better of you.�
�Is this Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? The million quid question? What did Jim and June get up to last night? I told you nothing happened� she said, but Gina knew she was hiding something.
�Hi Reg� Jim said as he walked into the canteen and got a cup of coffee.
�Hi Jim. So what have you been up to? I hope you got that thing out of your eye yesterday.�
Reg sat down opposite Jim and starting eating his sandwich.
�Yes thanks. Your drops helped.�
�Yeah good� Reg answered adding under his breath �I bet the kiss did too.�
�What?�
�I only said they don�t usually miss.�
�No you didn�t.�
�Yes I did.�
Jim looked at him, but thought nothing else of it until June came into the empty canteen a couple of hours later after everyone had gone home.
�Jim? Why did you call me down here?� June wondered. What was so important that they had to go to the canteen.
�We need to talk. Alone.� June stared at him hoping he wasn�t going to do anything silly.
�I think Reg knows about us.�
�Matt and Kerry too. And Gina, come to think about it. I thought they were acting strangely earlier. Asking about last night.�
Gina walked into the canteen. Jim who had his hand on June��s pulled back.
�It�s ok. I�m only getting a coffee. I won��t disturb you��re love talk.��You what?�
�Nothing.�
�Oh come on. You�re not the only one acting weird today. We know that you know about���
Jim stopped realising what he nearly said.
�Yeah. I know about you two. Oh and you ought to know that Matt, Kerry and Reg know too and are planning on squeezing it out of you.�
�So we�ll have to play along� June said looking at a very worried Jim.
�June� he said. �I don�t like this. Can�t we just tell the truth?�
�Not yet. I�ve got an idea.�
�Well let�s hear it� Gina replied as she took out a cigarette.
�I�ll flirt with Matt and you�ll do the same thing with Kerry and we�ll see how they react.�
�Flirt?�
�Yes. Tell them we really like them and ask them whether they want to out for a drink or dinner.� �I like it� Gina was intrigued.
�Don�t you go telling them mind.�
�Who me? Never� she said crossing her fingers behind her back. June looked at Gina and swore her to secrecy.
The next day Jim went to find Kerry and June to find Matt.
Kerry was in the ladies locker room. She was shocked to see Jim enter as she shut her locker. �Fancy going out for a drink tonight?� Jim got straight to the point.
�Sure. Who else is going?�
�No one. I thought we could go alone. See, I�ve been meaning to tell you something for ages, but I didn��t know how. I like you Kerry.�
�I��I���
�What is he doing?� Kerry thought to herself. �Sure. Say, right after the shift?�
�Ok, see you then�
After Jim left Gina walked in to see Kerry sitting on a chair.
�What�s wrong?�
�I don�t know Ma�am. Jim just asked me out.�
�Oh� Gina replied remembering the events in the canteen the day before.
�Oh what?�
�Jim and June know that you know about them. They�re going to turn the teasing around and see how you react.�
�So we have to play along too.�
Kerry left the locker room to go and tell Matt of their new plans.
Meanwhile June was also looking for him. She found him in CAD.
�Matt. Craig said I would find you here. Fancy going out for a drink tonight?�
�Sure.�
�Just the two of us mind.�
�Oh. I thought you meant the relief too.�
�No no. I thought we could have dinner and talk.�
�Yeah talking about the old times sounds fun.�
�I meant talk about you and me. See I�ve wanted to tell you something for ages but never got round to it� June said rubbing his shoulder.
�June.�
�Hmm.�
�I�m married.�
�Oh, that just makes it more interesting.�
With that she left leaving Matt stunned.
Kerry found him in the same state when she tracked him down five minutes later.
�I��I��� Matt stuttered.
�What? Let me guess, June just asked you out. It�s alright. It�s all part of their plan to get back at us. But we�re going to play along and twist it again.�
�Thank God for that. I thought she was serious, so what�s going on?�
Kerry sat down and told Matt the whole story.
�So how are your plans for tonight going?� Jim asked June as Brandon left CSU.
�Well, Matt certainly fell for it.�
�Good, Kerry did too. I�ve booked the tables for half eight. And made sure we can�t hear each other but see each other� Jim answered.
�Good. This better work. Make sure we don�t bump into you. We don�t want this out in the open.�
Jim sat down beside June and kissed her.
�What was that for?�
�You know what. I can�t wait to see you later.�
�Just come to mine straight afterwards. Ok?�
�Yes sarge.�
�Oi. Watch it you� June laughed as she got up and left the office.
�You ready for this Kerry?� Matt asked as they met at the front desk.
�Yeah. Have fun sarge. You ready Jim� she said as he came down the stairs. �
Yeah. Let�s go.� Matt waited for June and they too left for their ��date��.
�Thanks for this Matt� June said after he offered to pay the bill.
�It�s alright. It was good to talk. Mind you, for a minute I thought you wanted to talk about us.�
�We did. Oh, you mean us? Oh Matt!� she said laughing.
Matt started blushing. �I feel so stupid now.�
At the same time Kerry and Jim got their bill and Jim paid.
Both couples walked outside bumping into each other accidentally.
�What are you two doing here?� June asked innocently. �
�Same as you probably� Jim replied. �Eating.�
�Thanks for the dinner Jim. It was good� Kerry said as she moved over to kiss him on the lips.
Matt did the same to June.
�We should do it again. Maybe as a double date.�
Kerry wanted to see how Jim would react to a more intense kiss.
�Stop it� he said as he pushed her away.
�What�s wrong Jim? Not like it?�
June watched on stunned.
�I�m sorry Kerry. I can�t do this.�
�Oh Jim� she replied as she went to kiss him again.
�No. Stop it.�
�What? Why not?� Again trying to come closer.
�Because��because I love June� he stuttered. Kerry and Matt stared at him.
�You what?� Matt asked.
�I love you June.�
�I love you too Jim� she replied as they hugged each other and kissed.
�So Reg was right then� Matt said walking away with Kerry.
�Reg knows?� June asked Jim when Matt and Kerry were gone and they were walking to the car. �I don�t know but it looks like we might need to go public since they know. It��ll be around the station by lunchtime if we don��t tell them before they say something.�
�I don��t care anymore. All that matters is that we�re together.�
With that they got into the car and drove home.
The next morning they went to the briefing and told everyone about what had happened.
�So we can��t say anything� Matt said. �Typical.�
�That�s not fair� Kerry said.
�Well, you could congratulate us� June told her.
�Congratulations but what for?�
�We got engaged last night.�
Everyone in the room was shocked at first but they all congratulated them after Tony agreed to be best man and make up with Jim.
�I hope this means we�re back to normal then� Jim said to Tony and June.
2 months later June and Jim got married and announced they were having a baby at the reception. �I love you Jim Carver.�
�And I love you June Carver. Ooh, that sounds weird.�
�I know. But it doesn�t matter, As long as we have each other.�
�Forever� Jim added.
Everyone in the room clapped as they kissed one last time before going on honeymoon.
