Part 1
�You two look happy, have you two finally stopped messing around�
�Better than that� Jim smile beamed even wider
�We are getting married� June said as her smile matched that of Jim�s
�That�s fantastic, I�m so happy for you both, everyone at the station will be so chuffed when you tell them, you know how they like to party�
�We are not going to tell them till afterwards, we don�t want to make a big deal of it�
�You are one of the honoured few� June said as Tony kissed her cheek
�Would you be my best man�
�You serious Jim?�
�I have never been more serious, it would not be right without you�
�I don�t know what to say�
�Try saying yes� June laughed
�Of course I will�
�People are going to guess that something is going on� Tony said as he put a pint of beer and a pint of lemonade down on the table in front of him � You have got a stupid inane grin on your face that will give the game away if you are not careful�
�Well I will have to risk it wont I, thank you for agreeing to be our best man�
�It will be an honour, chance to mark a new beginning for us all, you two especially , I am really happy for you two, as I said the other day you are so right for each other�
�After what you said to me in the hospital, I was thinking about everything and what June meant to me and everything you said was true��I have been such an idiot, I wish I could turn the clock back, said yes to June when she asked me to marry her�
�As I said new beginning, the past is in the past, you are getting married and nothing else matters now�
�Yeah, you are right�
Jim looked at the photo he was holding, it had been hidden in his locker at work for so long, hidden during his marriage to Marie so that she would not destroy it, she had destroyed so much of his soul but the memories of his life with June was the one thing she could never touch. He had spent so long looking at his photo since June�s accident as his feelings for Junes became stronger and stronger.
Tony�s words had had a deep effect on him, whilst June had been in theatre he had sat there thinking of all the wasted chances he had with June that he was determined not to waste any more time.
He had thought he had ruined things after their argument a few days previously, the bitterness was evident in June�s voice as he had tried to justify his treatment of her, despite all there conversations regarding their previous relationship Jim had not realised till that point how much what he had done had effected her.
When they next talked Jim apologised for his poor timing and for the pain and upset he had caused her over the past 18 months. June explained to Jim how she had felt about him and what she still felt for him and for the first time after all they had been through together since their relationship had finished they finally cleared the air and were honest with each other.
They made the decision to try again with their relationship once June was back in good health and see what happened.
Jim knew he was lucky that June had given him a second chance, she could have just walked away but as she had pointed out they needed each other to survive. Her words had been the catalyst which spurred him on to propose to her today. He was so happy that she had said yes, at one point he did not think she would but as soon as her face broke into a smile he knew he would not be disappointed. He now had the rest of his life to make up for the pain he had caused her
A few days later June was discharged from hospital, she was still a bit slow on her feet following the life saving surgery she had but had never felt so alive before. Jim had picked her up from the hospital and had arranged to take a few days off to look after her, he had been expecting someone to question why he was the one looking after June but no one questioned it.
He was stood at the stove cooking when he felt June�s arms slip round his waist
�I thought you were putting your feet up and watching the tele�
�I have done that all afternoon, why is it when you want to watch TV all the time you can�t and when you can you don�t want too�
Jim laughed and turned round to face her
�I don�t know, one of those great unanswerable questions, you look tired, why don�t you sit back down, dinner wont be much longer�
�It�s lonely in the sitting room on my own, I can�t believe that we are back together, it�s like all my Christmases and birthdays have come at once�
�This time it�s forever, nothing is ever going to come between us again I promise�
�Good, I�ve given you up once before and I�m never doing that again�
She reached up to him and captured his lips with hers, their kiss turning intense and passionate, proving that the spark between them had not disappeared
�I�ve suddenly lost my appetite for food� she said smiling at Jim
�You have only just come out of hospital�
�Well you will just have to gentle with me wont you� she took hold of his hand and lead him upstairs
A few weeks later Jim came into the kitchen where June was stood drinking a cup of coffee
�You sure you are ready to go back� he said kissing her on the cheek
�Stop worrying, I will be fine, I�m only on light duties for week, not much can happen to me in custody can it, anyway I�m sure Gina will keep her eye on me, as well as you and Tony�
�Very true, I can�t help worrying, you are extremely precious to me, I want you in one piece for our wedding next week�
�I promise that I will stay away from anything that could jeopardise my ability to marry you, I can�t wait to be Mrs Carver�
