The fact that the engine comes with forged internals as standard is an absolute godsend to the tuning freaks within us all, and means that the little 3 cylinder can take some real abuse (wooohoooooo!!!!)
With the standard ECU the fuel injection is grouped (all injectors fir at the same time), the boost is limited to 12.5 psi maximum (but well soon fix that!!)
With the aid of a bleed valve and an acurate boost guage you can safely squeeze 15 psi boot out of the engine with no ther mods!
However, as Dane has shown with his car (see article) the potential the engine has is enormous, with an aftermarket ECU (no boost or fuel cuts, sequential injector fire etc), a slightly larger windmill (turbo), pair of re-profiled camshafts, free-flow exhaust, larger throttlebody and hi-flow induction kit(and a lot of love and caring) you too can have more torque than a BMW 3.5 straight 6 (240nm ish)! And not far off 200bhp!
But your gearbox, clutch and brakes will need some serious sorting before this!
Anyway, hopefully I can persuade a very nice chap I know (Ruaraidh) to suggest a staged upgrade path for the Gtti.. Ill keep you all updated
