Portfolio Lesson Plan 5

Topic:  Abortion

Objectives:  By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
  • define pro-life and pro-choice
  • discuss their points of view about abortion
Grade Level:  12

Curriculum Area:  Health IV

Internet Focus:  Realtime chat

Summary of Project:  The instructor will begin by explaining the difference between pro-choice and pro-life.  Students will then select a position to defend.  The instructor will assign confidential chat names in a private chat using AIM Express.  This will allow students to speak more freely about their opinions.  Using what they have learned about abortion from class, students will debate among each other about their position.  Only one student may speak at a time by entering the # symbol.  The instructor will facilitate the discussion.

Assessment:  This discussion will count as part of their participation grade which is worth 15% of their total grade for the marking period.

Extension:  Students will research the republican and democratic candidates to determine which position they take regarding abortion, pro-life or pro-choice.  Students will consider the following:  What position do they take?  Would this influence your decision about who you would vote for? Why or why not?
