19th Century Journal written in elaborate cramped handwriting  The sheer amount of time invested into this journal justiifies the price and its history makes it even more intriguing.. The grimoire book that belonged to Hereward Carrington at one time. Hereward Carrington (1880-1958) was one of the great psychic researchers of the 20th Century. He was friends with Houdini, Crowley, and other greats in the magic and occult realm. He published many books, including Houdini and Conan Doyle, along with Bernard Ernst. He was President and founder of the American Psychical Institute. This particular section originates from 1899 and is written in German and HebrewThe jounral is written in in Various Languages - The grimoire  has nothing to do
with the Golden Dawn, exept for the fact that Mathers used some of the material found in it in his instructional paper for the order. For this, see "the complete Golden Dawn system of magick" or other books on the subject, where you for example can recognise the symbols for the planets, the seals belonging to their spirits, intelligences, etc. But Mathers most probably collected theese from Agrippa, and not from this book. The book you have is
in fact a transcript from a german work entitled
"Sammlung der groessten Geheimnisse ausserordentlicher Menschen in alter
Zeit".

Loosely translated this would be something like "Collection of the greatest
secrets from the extraordinary people of old". The book was published around
1725, and is an extremely rare book to find today. In the time of its
publishing it was most probably only found in the libraries of nobleen and
other wealty people. Thus, today there is wery few copies available. I have
knowledge only of two such books, one printed, and one swedish
translation!!!??? This remarkable translation was done by a swede that most
probably had access to the printed edition I know of. Both are located at
the same area. The swedish translation are just likethis book, a
notebook/journal. It was probably translated sometimes during the early
1800. This book is  owned by the Nordic Museum in Stockholm. I The only possibillity is to travel to Stockholm
to see it, and copy it by hand.  the contents of the
chapters that I know of.

Chapter I
The Sixth & Seventh books of Moses.
This book is indeed a little mystery in itself. The book is supposedly to
have been published in Germany by Johann Scheible in 1849, but no german
edition of this book is available today and the germans dont know of it.
This is not so strange, because in Germany the book known as 6. & 7. books
of Moses is a completely different book alltogether, and in no way resembles
the one we outside germany know of. To see the book in your grimoire in
english, go to the following address:

http://www.sacred-texts.com/grim/index.htm

here you will find it. It consists of hebrew letters etc. This book can be
bought from most bookstores on the internet. The fact of the matter is that
Johann Scheible published this book in 1849 in a periodical called
"Wanderer". He moust probably got it from "our grimoire". The "6. & 7." was
then translated into english in 1880. In Norway this book has been around
for many years, my great grandfather owned a swedish translation (wich I now
own) and a norwegian translation was made last year.

Chap. III
"Appendix conserning treasuredigging"
I only have fragments from this chapter, but in my copies I can see that the
beginning of the chapter is decorated with a sigill from "the black raven"
of Dr. Faust. For this book see page:

http://www.grimoires.com/ and for the seal in question:
http://www.grimoires.com/Faust/last.html

Why this sigill is here, I do not know, since it has nothing to do with
treasure hunting. I suppose this Faustbook is included in the compendium
(since there is a lot of sigils from it in the bookon my copies), but this I
will first know when I see the complete book.

Chap. VII?
"The trumpet of venus"
This grimoire, written by the famous magician John Dee in 1580, just before
he started his enochian experiments is only available on the internett in
latin. See page:

http://www.esotericarchives.com/dee/tubaven.htm

There has been four publications in german of this grimoire to my knowledge.
The first one was in "our Grimoire" in 1725, the next one was in a
publication of 1794 entitled "Handschriften fur Freunde geheimer
Wissenschaften" or "Handwritings published for the friends/lovers of the
secret sciences" this book got its material from "our grimoire". This last
book is altso extremely scarce today. The modern publications are two:

1. Das Venus buchlein zur Beschworung boser Geister auf eine gottseliget
weise. Bearb. u. krbec Horst, Ubers v. Leopold. F.

2. Jrg M. Meier, Das Bchlein der Venus (Bonn 1990).

Book nr. 1 is based on the german translation of "our grimoire", book nr.2
is a diffrent translation, perhapes done especially for the publication. I
have been interested in this grimoire for many years, and has just finished
a norwegian translation of it.

Chap. X
"Planetary Spirits"
This is from Agrippa, if I remember correctly. Gives times etc for working
with the planetary spirits, their seals, amulets, etc. You probably find it
in the three books of occult philosophy by him.

Chap. XII
The grand Grimoire
For all those critics that belive that this grimoire was created some time
in the middle of the 1800, this should be a real kick in the nuts;). The
grimoire as presented here is a translation of the peculiar edition of 1421.
Joseph Peterson wonders if it first have been published in french round
1750, but of course it has to be older since it is translated and published
in "our Grimoire" in 1725!. He correctly asserts that;

"This version contains many interesting variations from the Antonio
Venitiana 1845 edition, both in the content and in the magical diagrams.
Although I do not claim any expertise in the paleography of French books,
this edition also seems to have more archaic forms, e.g. "parotre" vs.
"paratre", "savoir" vs. "savoir" etc. It is catalogued as circa 1750 (?)"

The book does indeed have a more archaic form, because it most probably is
one of the first editions, on wich the later editions were based. For some
examples of this grimoire see the page:

http://www.esotericarchives.com/solomon/grand.htm

This particular edition altso contains the hand of glory, wich is not usual
in later editions. See for instance the Grand Grimoire published by Trident
Books etc.

Other Chapters:

The above consists of the books I have seen either with a chapter heading,
or out from its placement and page numbers on my copies, I have managed to
assert to wich chapters they belonged to (Nr. VII). Besides theese books I
altso believe the work to contain a book called "Herpentils swartze magie"
or "the black magic of Herpentil", wich is a famous, but rare german
grimoire. It can be found in the book called "Zauberglaube und geheimwisse"
in a reprint. I will know the excact position of this grimoire when i see
the text.
. It is 118 pages of handwritten text in a journal 8 x 13 inches. Dated from 1895 through about 1906, though text could be older, appears to be in German mostly, maybe another language, with some various Hebrew writing and some drawings as seen.
There is so much writing, even appears to have some spells and drawings and references to Satan and Lucifer . There is some English near the end that seems to speak of fighting evil , perhaps this was used by the Theosophical Society , Qabalists , Freemasons , Occult use , or ? .
I tried to take some pictures to give an idea of the great scope of this text. Someone spent a great deal of time in assembling this. First 2 pages appear to be an expense account for buying various items or some expenses, cocaine for instance is ledger. Dr. Boulee and medicine is mentioned, as is Lutheran State Hospital of Brooklyn. This page is dated 1895.
The journal seems to start on page 23 and runs to 139, with 2 unnumbered pages at the end and 1 inside cover page as well, so a total of 120 pages of text. There is also some sort of handwritten index with page references.
Front and back covers detached and very worn. Binding is very loose, spine mostly gone, though pages still mostly together and it can be read carefully, though a rebinding is needed. The neat handwriting an meticulous nature of the journal does not extend to the artwork. He appears to have traced  a majority of the drawings and pasted them into the book. This gives the book an even more unique appearance.

This journal was owned by Hereward Carrington at one time.
