                                                Kerala : A Cultural Heritage


Kerala has evolved a unique culture. It is a highly politicized region, but has a long tradition of religious amity. It is an educationally advanced state with its own language, Malayalam, and has the highest rate of literacy (100%) among Indian states. Women in Kerala enjoy a high social status, thanks perhaps to its historic matrilineal system. Art forms of Kerala range from Kalaripayattu, the martial art believed to be the origin of various other oriental ones, to Kathakali, one of the dance forms of Kerala considered to be amongst the oldest indian dance styles. The elegant snake boat races have always been the favorite of tourists visiting Kerala.
                                         Festivals ,Dances & Arts

Kathakali is the ancient dance form in Kerala.The painted artists with decorations all around the body, dances to the tune of ancient Hindu legends of India. Kathakali is mainly played during Onam season Onam is the regional festival of Kerala and is celebrated by Malayalees all around the world.
Thiruvathirakali is a danceform which is a pointer to the old customs followed in Nair tharawads (joint families) where the women of the house dance elegantly around the ceremonial lamp or floral decoration on festive occasions to the accompaniment of the Thiruvathira pattu (song).

Pooram is the great elephant pageant typical of certain temples in Kerala. Bejewelled tuskers numbering ten to hundred, line up for this exotic spectacle with mahouts sitting top of them . The pageant is accompanied by the temple drummer (panchavadyam) which gradually works up to a crescendo.
Boat races - Oars swing to rhythm. Snakeboats shoot across emerald stretches. Exhilarated crowds cheer. Blue skies and green nature, monsoon fresh, smile on. At the spellbinding display of strength and beauty on the backwater stretches of Alleppey, Aranmula, Payipad and Pulinkunnu. (August - September)

Pulikali also known as kaduvakali is a common sight in Kerala during festive seasons.Performers painted like tigers in bright yellow, red and black,dance to the loud beats of percussion instruments like the udukku and thakil.
Kalaripayattu is the comprehensive system of martial arts of Kerala, regarded as one of the oldest and most scientific in the world. Kalaripayattu training aims at the ultimate co-ordination of mind and body. The traditional training in a Kalari includes specialisation in indigenous medical practices too. Kalaris are also centres of religious worship
