Indian dance is a blend of nritta - the rhythmic elements, nritya - the combination of rhythm with expression and natya - the dramatic element. Nritta is the rhythmic movement of the body in dance, pure dance. In India, dance and music pervade all aspects of life and bring colour, joy and gaiety to a number of festivals and ceremonies.
Baisakhi: All over the north the solar new year's day is observed on this day. For Sikhs, it is of special religious importance as the day of the formation of the Singh, who converted the Sikhs into a martial race. It is also the harvest festival of the Punjab and is celebrated with Bhangra dances and gaiety.

Bharat Natyam is poetry in motion. It is an extremely precise dance style where a huge repertoire of hand movements are used to convey moods and expressions. Its format consists of Alarippu (invocation) , Jathi Swaram, Shabdam (notes and lyrics), Varnam (a combination of pure dance and abhinaya), lighter items like Padams and Javalis.
Onam, the principal festival of Kerala, is celebrated against a setting of lush green vegetation. This picturesque harvest festival brings ten days of colour feasting, boat races, song and dance to the state. The festival is to welcome the spirit of King Mahabali, the mythical ruler of Kerala, and to assure him that his people are happy and wish him well.

Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu custom marking the love and affection between brothers and sisters. Raksha means protection , Bandhan means bond. On this day, when a girl ties a rakhi on her brother's wrist, she makes fervent wishes for his prosperity, happiness and success in all he undertakes. In return, he renews his pledge to guard her honour and self-respect with the last drop of his blood.
Christmas: The birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. Its a time when every house hold is decorated with colours and lights and the family sets together to pray and celebrate. The evergreen christmas tree which is such an integral part of christmas is decorated with snow flakes. Carol singing and sending cards to ones near and dear are other main activities of this festive season.

The holy month of Ramzan is very auspicious to the Muslims in India. The Muslims are ordained to observe fast for 30 days starting with the sighting of the new moon and end it after seeing the new moon the next month. Ramzaan is a month of brotherhood, renewal of relationships and festivity and the rigor of fasting ends with the celebration of Id.Id-Mubarak!
Diwali is a festival of lights symbolising the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness. This festival commemorates Lord Rama's return to his kingdom Ayodhya after completing his 14-year exile. Twinkling oil lamps or diyas light up every home and firework displays are common all across the country. The goddess Lakshmi who is the symbol of wealth and prosperity, is also worshipped on this day.
