Basil Mezy

Kalasho Lieutenant
1986-1989
1965-1989

As a lieutenant in the Kalasho Organization, Basil Mezy acted as the contact man between the Kalasho suppliers operating out of Tampa, Florida. Mezy "along with Ead Ballo and Najah (Nick) Konja were amoung the highest ranking members of the ring anserwing directly to Kalasho's cousin Ray Akrawi. Mezy was amoung a contingent of Kalasho supporters who flew down to Tampa in the spring of 1986 and cemented the agreement which transformed the Kalasho group from a small time outfit dealing in ounce deals to a major league competitor capable of filling multi-kilo orders. The ground breaking deal called for Joseph Frontiera and Anthony Montello to supply the Kalasho ring with a steady stream of Columbian cocaine secured directly from the Medellin cartel. The details of the deal top months to iron out but once things got rolling, the Kalasho group became the first major ring since the dismantling of the Davis Family Operation to independently secure their product. Within a year, federal agents watched as Mezy and Basam Jarges delivered $600,000 packed in two suite cases to Jaime Giraldo a Columbian national who along with his brother Norberto distributed cocaine for the Medellin cartel from a base in New York. Over the next four months payments exceeding $8 million were delivered by Mezy to the Giraldo brothers. Basil Mezy's run as a top member of the Kalasho operation ended on June 12, 1988 with the seizure of a semitrailor at I-75 and West Road. Federal agents found 100 kilos of Kalasho cocaine hidden amoung a load of bananas. Soon after the seizure, Mezy, Jarges and their contact to the Medellin cartel were arrested. Mezy and Jarges pled guilty to moneylaundering in exchange for reduced sentences. 1
