Best Friends

1985-1990

Formed in 1985 by Maserati Rick Carter to serve as a protection wing for his growing drug empire, Best Friends would go on to establish itself as the most vicious drug gang in the state of Michigan for the latter part of the '80s. Best Friends consisted of two entities the business half which consisted of legendary cocaine dealers Richard Carter, his best friend Demetrius Holloway and teenage drug sensation White Boy Rick Wershe. The proceeds derived from this trio's drug deals financed the formation of an enforcement wing headed by the Brown brothers Ezra, Gregory, Reggie and Terrance. Control of the enforcement arm of the gang would pass to Reggie after the murders of his older brothers Ezra and Gregory a week apart in December of 1985.

&nbps; At their peak Best Friends controlled drug trafficking on the eastside of Detroit while extending their influence into areas such as Flint, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Port Huron, Saginaw and Grand Rapids Michigan. With a roster consisting of no more than 25 to 30 core members, Best Friends exhibited an unmatched ferocity carried out with the use of automatic weapons such as Uzis and AK47s. They were recognizable by their trademark black jackets with Best Friends embroidered on their backs and the the new Volvos which they adopted as their vehicle of choice. The murder of Richard Carter "in 1989," and Demetrius Holloway "1990," marked the start of Best Friends decline.

Following the death of the two most prominent founding members within a year of each other, control of Best Friends reverted to teenage drug dealer Rick Wershe and Terrance Brown. These two kept the gang in the headlines with their major drug deals and penchant for useing violence untill authorities brought the party to a halt by convicting Wershe in 1988. Terrance escaped a possible life sentence when he was acquitted of murdering an associate of Wershe's in the early '90s. Brown would meet his end in the back of a stolen pickup truck in the parking lot of an Atlanta Hotel in 1993.
