Beginning Aug. 1, 2011, Waste Management assumed responsibility for collecting trash, recyclables and yard waste on Jekyll Island. Waste Management furnished 90-gallon, roll-out containers and recycling bins to each residence. Until this date, the Jekyll Island Authority was responsible for trash pick-up.
Regulations for trash pickup remained the same, with some exceptions. Waste Management will pick up each Wednesday various recyclable items (see list below), where residents formerly had to take these to the recycling center on the south side of the island. Also, certain restrictions on yard waste were imposed by Waste Management (see below).
The trash collection fee for one container is $27.50 a month, with the billing continuing to be done by JIA. For an additional $7 a month, Waste Management will roll the container to and from the street. Trash Collection Schedule:
Monday: Albright, Austin, Barnes, Barron, Beachview, Bliss, Borden, Brice, Dexter, Ellis, Forrest, Gould, King, Lanier, Ogden, Nelson, Potter, Stewart, Tallu Fish, Thorne, Tyler.
Tuesday: Baker, Bond, Capt. Wylly, Claflin, Clark, Glynn, Hayes, Howland, Hyde, Jennings, Macy, Magee, Maurice, Morgan, N. Riverview, Old Plantation, Pierson, Porter, St. Andrews. Holiday schedule:
If a holiday falls on a Monday or Tuesday, the trash will be collected on the following day.
Trash service:
- Place your trash on the curb by 7 am on your service day
- Extra trash - occasional extra trash should be bagged and placed beside the cart. If more than occasional, please call JIA to request a 2nd cart.
- Trash is considered household trash and does not include appliances, furniture, tires, large batteries, etc.
- Optional services include an extra trash cart ($11.25 per month per cart) and back door service.
Recycling:
- Place your recycle bin on the curb by 7 am on Wednesday with contents inside the bin.
- Place on recyclables in the same container. Do not bag. Please leave recyclables loose. Remove caps and labels if possible. Rinse out recyclables.

- Paper cardboard, dairy and juice containers

Yard Trash:
- Yard waste will be collected once a week from the curb. Pickup days are Wednesday,.Thursday or Friday.
- Place yard waste in piles and/or bags at the curb by 7 am each Wednesday.
- Size limits
- Regular service includes 2 cubic yards per week per home.
- If you will have more than 2 cubic yards, call WM on Monday or Tuesday the week of pick up to alert them. Extra charges apply for pickups more than 2 cubic yards. (For more than 2 cubic yards and up to 7 cubic yards, the cost is $35 per pick up; for more than 7 cubic yards, the charge is $65 an hour.)
- Limbs or branches can be no more than 3 feet in length and 3 inches in diameter.
