Duran Duran was the original name for the group. Bassist John Taylor took the name of the villain in Roger Vadim's 1967 film "Barbarella" starring Jane Fonda. He liked the rhythm of the name and decided it matched the band's "edgy" sound at the time. Two of the founding members were considering another name, a three-letter acronym (RAF?) that wasn't intended to stand for anything.
