"George Gray" by Edgar Lee Masters
I have studied many times
The marble which was chisled for me-
A boat with a furled said at rest in a harbor.
In truth it pictures not my destination
But my life.
For love was offered me and I shrank from its
Disillusionment;
Sorrow knocked at my door, but I was afraid;
Ambition called to me, but i dreaded my chances.
yet all the while I hungered for meaning in my life.
And now I know that we must life the sail
And catch the winds of destiny
Wherever they drive the boat.
To put meaning in one's life may end in madness,
But life without meaning is the torture
Of restlessness and vague desire-
It is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid.
Masters describes in his poem how "gray life can be. Expressing what life is shows not only the future, but what are the challenges. Master describes life as a "tied boat in the harbor." Clearly, the boat describes life as a standstill. Master tries to build himself backup but he is afraid to face this troublesome life.
Personally, Masters is wrong about about "George Gray". Instead, he uses George Gray to show how a life unlived is meaningless. You should never sit still in life. When you have an opportunity, you should go for it. Life is a mysterious element that can only be unlocked by determination. If you just relax in life, you will suffer. Masters is only correct on the term when destiny calls. Destiny and life go hand in hand.
