Critical Lens II

"There's no frigate(cargo ship)like a book to take us lands far away." This is an agreeable statement. There is nothing like a book to take your mind to a different place. A book can open your imagination and take you to any part of the world and any year. The works of literature that can help prove this statement are Their Eyes Are Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston and " The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe.
In the novel Their Eyes Are Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Tea cake was bitten by the mad dog and had to be killed. The description of the setting and mood is very detailed. When Janie is forced to kill her husband Tea cake, it really helps you realize that this story is from 1940's. The simple fact that in our days Tea cake could have gotten a vaccine shot much sooner. The structure of the southern style, and southern speech helps you imagine it was there. You are consumed by every little detail in the book to have you think you're with them in the south.
In the poem, " The Raven " by Edgar Allan Poe, Poe has the reader reading each line. No line is useless. Every line is either telling how the mood, setting or how the guy in the poem feels. There is a storm going on. He is in his room (chambers) by himself. He just lost his wife and here is a raven knocking at his door. The raven is always saying " Never more ." The poem takes you with it's description.
There is nothing like a book. When you read you can be oin the south working in the fields or you can be in a dark scary room all by yourself. That is why " There's no frigate like a book to take us lands far away. "
