Wired Essay

In the past English classes, teachers have always taught their students in the traditional fashion. The teachers would stand in the front of a class of 25-30 students and lecture them on spelling, grammar, and writing compositions. The teacher would give the studets a book to read like A Tale of Two Cities, The Crucible, or The Color of Water and the students would have to write a report about the book including the theme, the climax and what was so intriguing about that book.
This year, in Mrs. Mayo's Memoir Elective class, we have strayed from tradition just a little. Instead of being in a classroom, our classes are conducted in a computer lab. We are still given books to read for the class but the reports that we write are place on our personal web page over the internet for the world to see. By using this method of teaching, we are more conscience about what we are writing.
Working in Mr. Mayo's class has helped me better understand computers. In the begin of the class term, I had a little trouble building my web page and putting my written work on the internet. I didn't quite understand the computer terminology or the steps for putting art work on my web page. After about a week or two of class, I was helping other students organize their web pages, which relieved Mrs. Mayo of that responsibility.
I can honestly say that this class has helped me both in my technique in writing and in better understanding the internet. Don't get me wrong, the traditional way of teaching english is necessary for building the proper foundation for better writing skills, but at the same time, times are changing and technology is becoming more advance. We need to be prepared for tomorrow's world and this is one way of doing it.
