Mango

HOW TO EAT A MANGO

When to look for them in your grocery store: Mangos are available all year.

How to Select: Pick up the mango and check the area around the stem for plumpness and roundness. With the stem end up, smell the mango. If ripe, it will emit a fruity aroma. Avoid fruit that is very soft or bruised. Color is not always a good indicator of ripeness. The most common mango varieties turn yellow as they ripen but other varieties can be ripe when green or only become slightly yellow. How to Use: Wash mangos carefully in cool water before using. Use mangos in mixed fruit salads, ice cream and as exotic additions to meat dishes, stir-frys and omelets. Make mango muffins or mousse. Special Tip: To peel a mango, make four cuts through the skin and peel like a banana. Use a sharp knife to separate the fruit from the seed.

How to Store: To ripen a mango, store at room temperature. Ripened mangos can be stored in the crisper bin of your refrigerator away from vegetables for up to five days.

When I was 11 I used to love climbing the mango trees with my friends. When it was mango season we would wake up early in the mornings, climb a tree with each of us choosing a branch and for the rest of the day we would not move. Life for us was good.

I never pealed the skin off my mango, I think that using a knife is for first timers and amateurs. when I eat a mango I squeeze it first, to make all the juice collect in one place, then I bite in and if it is done right this is one of the most enjoyable and tasteful treat you will ever get.

Now if you are like me and like to try new things then you should try eating a green mango. Now it might sound disgusting but this is one of those things that if done right is so enjoyable. You take a knife and peel the mango, slice it into little pieces and here comes the disgusting part, take salt and pepper and sprinkle it over the slices. Preferably more salt than pepper dig in and enjoy.
