The Color Of Water

The Color Of Water by James McBride Is one of the best books I've read this year and the year has just begun. The way Mr. McBride writes takes you into the book to the point where you can see his mother riding the bicycle or you can hear his mother shouting at him. The way he tells us about the time his mother didn't come to pick him up and he was so scared and he saw a bunch of kids coming down the street and he knew they weren't his mother because they didn't look like his mother. And they were loud and they were unkempt and it was when they got closer that he noticed that they were his brothers and sisters. I liked that part because he hints on the way people see his family because he saw them that way on that day. He didn't know who they were and he described what he saw. He learns a lot of lifelessons and he tells us about them. He tells us about finding out about his mother's background and making it a part of his own life as well. McBride uses a two people writing technique where he alternates between his story with him being the narrator and his mother's story with her being the narrator.I like that technique because I don't see a lot of writers using it.

Now that I have finished reading The Color of Water I think I have a better understanding of the techniques needed to write a memoir.
