Ki no Izumi's poetry
The thick white blanket
Has ragged holes where green shoots
Tantalizingly
Peep at the watery sun.
Perhaps coldness has melted.

January 2006
Mist rises in streams
While tears fall from the sky
As I sit alone.
When shall another arrive
To share warm and fragrant tea?

August 2004
Waiting was fruitless.
I should have slept, warm with dreams
Instead of freezing
All night on a river bank
With the brilliant moon shining.

March 2005
Inspired by Go games played at night while camping:

Staring intently
They search the board for weakness
And marshal their strengths.
Lanterns flicker in the wind
As victory approaches.

August 2004
Rain drips from the eaves
As I gaze at wild grasses
Valiantly upright.
Will sorrow assault my heart
Before colored leaves descend?

August 2004

Parasols leaning;
Colors glowing in sunlight
Like Buddha's mercy.
Breezes send them spinning, but
Clouds gather again so soon.

August 2004
Winds sweep through my heart.
Attachments drift from my soul;
Brightly colored leaves
That float upon the soft breeze
And fan me with their passing.

October 2004
Passing the river;
Streams of silk dye the water
Red, blue, and yellow.
Sparkling thoughts of you color
Desires flowing through my heart.

September 2004
The white crane poises;
Ready to strike, yet still.
Frozen in the instant
Of utter and present now.
He strikes with skill and power.

May 2005

Even as I watch
The crane lifts its wings and flies;
Awkward, yet lovely;
Piercing the heart with its own
Beautiful imperfection.
