¡Bienvenido a Español!
Gulf Islands Border Graphic
The 2000-2001 school year will mark the first year of Spanish as a ¨regular¨ class at Gulf Islands Secondary School. While in the past students have completed Spanish courses through distance education or distributed learning, for the 2000-2001 year students will be able to take their courses in a more traditional format. There will be one Introductory Spanish course first semester with Mrs. Julia Hengstler. Second semester there will be two classes -- one with Ms. Cristina Gismondi and another with Mrs. Hengstler. To enroll in Introductory Spanish, a GISS student must be of grade 10 standing and have already successfully completed a grade 9 level language. For Spanish 11, enrolling students must have successfully completed Introductory Spanish, or be able to demonstrate an comparable facility with the Spanish language (this will be determined by written and aural testing). Currently, all available seats for these courses are filled for the 2000-2001 year.

The textbooks for Introductory Spanish and Spanish 11 will be En español I and II. The courses will involve both conversational and written Spanish and will include readings and works from Hispanic cultures around the world. The introductory level course will teach students the basics of Spanish-- pronounciation, vocabulary, grammar, verb conjugations, conversation, Hispanic culture, as well as reading and writing. Students in level II will raise these skills to an intermediate level. Students in Spanish 11 should be prepared for more intensive work regarding vocabulary, grammar, verb usage, conversation and Hispanic literature. At both levels, students will also be working with Spanish language sites on the Internet during classes at GISS. Internet work will be a required component of Mrs. Hengstler´s section. If students feel that they do not have adequate on-line time, they will be required to contact Mrs. Hengstler to arrange additional access time. Students in both levels should be prepared for nightly homework to maintain a passing grade.
