DISTRIBUTED LEARNING
Distributed Learning refers to a student driven classroom model.  Teaching in this situation is "Teaching On Demand".  Students work independently at a pace determined by conference with the teacher.  Mini-lessons are taught to individuals or small groups depending on student need.  Students make use of the teacher's presence as one of the many learning resources available to them.  This program requires the teacher to switch gears quickly-  Math 11 concepts one moment -- English 9 the next. The teacher must also mentor the students in individually paced learning,  tracking their progress and guiding them to become more self-directed in their learning experiences.

The Distributed Learning class consists of students of various ages, ability levels and interests.  Our "grade" levels run from grade 9 to grade 12.  These represent the course content levels and not necessarily the students' ages -  although,  there are students in the typical age brackets spanned by  these "grade" levels.  The students and teacher cover a broad range of subjects -- English,  biology, social studies, mathematics and Spanish, to name a few-- using print and electronic course materials.  Some course materials are purchased from Open Learning (British Columbia), and Nelson Thompson (The Learning Equation). Other courses are taught using the standard GISS textbooks or thorough locally developed materials. Some students work through independent study where the student and teacher co-construct the curriculum and the demonstration of outcomes based on the BC Ministry of Education's prescribed learning outcomes.

Students may spend part or all of their school day in the Distributed Learning class.  The option of taking more than one course through Distributed Learning can be advantageous to some students needing a stability and security  not generally present in the usual secondary mode of moving from one environment and teacher to the next over the course of the day.  This program also gives students scheduling flexibility so that they may weave work, community, and other educational experiences into their "school" week without falling behind a "class".
