The Media

    Its all on TV
A child watches four hours of television a day, this is 28 hours a week. If your child watches more than 3 hours of non-educational television a day it will result in them watching at least 8,000 murders before they even finish grade school (AAP). That is very hard to do as on todays television every channel you turn to there is some sort of violence rather it be the news to bulls on a sitcom to a rated R movie.

The media portray violence as cool and the best resort to solve a problem. Very attractive actors are used and always win becoming a hero. It is not hard to see why children become violent as their heroes on television and movies are. These children are then taking what they see and using it in real life. Of course, they children are punished at school as all violence does have it consequence but this can cause a conflict in a childs mind. Children are confused why they are getting in trouble why the people on television are called heroes; it is confusing when any person is mixed messages like this.

The parents or primary care taker can easily solve this problem by just being involved with a child. A way to start is limiting a child time in front of the television. It is hard to see violent on television if the television in turned off. A caregiver can be a great example to a child as they also limit their television time. When a child does watch television you should chose and/or monitor what the child is watching. A great way to do this is to watch television with a child. This way you know what they are watch and be able to have quality time with them. After watching a television show or movie, it is a wonderful time to discuss with a child what was seen and an adult can then express to the child what they should know and how they feel about it. This way there is no confusion with the child of what is made believe and reality.

If there is a television show that is on that an adult thinks is not suitable for children, they should contact the network as well as get other adults to help in the support for better television for children.

Let children see a responsible adult as a hero not a violent character on television. This will result in children being less violent as they will learn that being violent is not the answer. This solution can also solve the problem of violence with video games.
