People forget but the whole idea of what the Sex Pistols started in 1976 was not just rock - although that is a perfectly honourable aim - but something much darker, much more dangerous. This was not positioning or a career move, but serious confrontation; you were being asked; even forced to do something that you've never done before, to take a deep breath, gather your courage and dive, dive into the dark recesses of your psyche. Sprites lurk there, and once out, they cannot be returned.
James was the Sex Pistols of our time, he went the furthest into the demons of time, the collective subconsious if you will. James saw himself in the tradition of poetis maudits - those decadents, who, disordering their senses, and in bringing themselves, to see the world with real eyes, to find the transdencence in degration.
Kraftwek and Sylvester, Evo and the Velvet Underground, anarchy and tackiness, machines and glitter, drugs and day dreams, night clubs and idealism, sex and paranoia, war and peace, ordinariness and extraordinariness all played vital roles into shaping James into what he is today.
Echoes of displacement ripping out from self-destruction. Evasion, resistance, elusiveness, vagueness, anonymity, indifference - with all of those, James managed to re-create and re-invent himself for such.
What was the question again?
For all those years, I have always trusted James and had string faith in him. I guess, you still have to find that out for yourselves.
