| Court of Le'resh | ||
| There is one daily staple of Le'resh's court life, some speculate it is the only thing that allows such strange and obviously rigid culture to survive. This is the daily ride. The entire court slips into riding clothes shortly after lunch, mounts their animals and tears across the plains. Pregnant women, old men and women who can barely walk, children, everyone in the court who is not on their death beds, and even some who are, take to the plains. It is considered a measure of status, who can ride the fastest, who goes the furthest from the city, who does the most tricks. Small prizes are rewarded to whoever wins the constests, such as a silvre ring, a small pendant, and certain bragging rights are allowed. The King, unfortunately does not attend, he does not get along well with horses. Queen Hantana has proven to be one of the best riders, year after year, though some foreigners speculate it is a gesture of respect that no one has beaten her. These people have obviously never been on a Ride with her. In Le'resh, formal court audiences only take place four times a year, perhaps the most formal of the formal courts is the one held on the first day of a new year. This is the day that anyone may approach the king and make their case known. However, this is not a privelege to be taken lightly, as it is also the one day of the year that unrepentant law breakers, especially those who have been convicted of treason or multiple murders, are sentenced, usually to death. In Le'resh the most important conversations are held without words, though plenty of people speak. There are over three hundred proper bows registered in the book of heraldry and etiquette, each of which has a different use. People speak to each other with flowers, and fans, a single gesture speaks volumes to the learned. The way a man bows over a lady's hand immediately tells her whether he is available for marriage or not, or if his brother is. If she taps him on the shoulder with her fan, he is dismissed, if she fans her face, he is allowed to stay, if she taps her wrist after, he may flirt. Knowledge of the hundred codes used in the day to day lives of Le'reshian nobles is ingrained from birth, and woe betide any foreigner who tries to mingle among them without it. They are infailingly courteous, but consider anyone unfamiliar with their ways barbaric, and speak to each other of it, when you are not looking. |
