| Greith, Capital of Raethos | ||
| Greith (Gray-ith) is a large city with a population of over 13,000 located near, but not on, the coastline. Only a small stream flows through Greith, but large irrigation systems are in place around the city. The capital has two layers, New Greith and Old Greith. Confusing to travelers, New Greith is actually the center layer while Old Greith is the outer. When Greith was first built, it had one layer inhabited by halflings. When the humans came, they built the second layer. Eventually, the first layer was torn down and rebuilt. In this fashion, the original layer was lost and the second layer became the old layer and the inner layer became new. 62% of Greith, and all of Raethos for that matter, is inhabited by halfling shadariths, 36% is inhabited human shadariths, and 2% is inhabited by other races. The climate of Raythos is typically very bleak and gray, and most people find it unappealing, so few other people inhabit Raethos. Actually, a large majority of the non- shadariths living within Raethos are renegades, fleeing their own nation to escape trial in Raethos. The Assembly rarely keeps track of immigrants for they are typically few and far between, and most other nations just tend to leave a criminal be when they flee to Raethos. Due to this, Raethos has become well known to be nice to rogues. The Seat of Greith is a citadel settled in the eastern area of New Greith. Two central towers are found in the center of the Seat, one holding the Cylinder and the other holding the Council Room. Eight other towers, slightly smaller, form an octagon around the two central towers. Each of these towers is based on a single school of magic and houses the archmage that represents the school. In the center of the Seat of Greith is a huge arena-like hall which holds the assembly, known as the Theater. The Theater is a huge room which can hold up to five hundred, so even with the assembly there it is only about halfway filled, that is magically supported and built. It is shaped like an octagon, but the corners do not match up to the towers. At the center of the Theater is a small table at which the eight archmages sit. The archmages, however, do not sit facing each other but rather facing the assembly, their backs together. A person who is standing in the Theater has his/her voice magically increased so that it booms through the hall, and a person who is sitting has his/her voice magically decreased so that a neighbor can barely hear him/her. The table in the center of the Theater is very magical. When a vote is issued, a scroll appears above the table, facing in the direction of each person present at once, describing the details of the poll. The table then delves into the mind of everyone present and finds their answer, and then their signature appears on the scroll under the answer they had chosen. When the vote is concluded, the scroll forms a material version of itself on the table, which is then normally moved to the library. The majority of Greith is sized for the larger shadariths, presuming that the smaller ones would be able to function effectively within. Stairs and ladders often have slightly closer steps so that both small and large shadariths can use them. Shelves and cabinets are often placed at human height, but it is considered an insult not to have a step-stool in your household. For the most part, the halfling shadariths do not mind being shorter then the human shadariths, feeling themselves to be the same race, just different sized. |
