Helpful Information on Tornadoes

The difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning

A Tornado Watch is issued by meteorologists when weather conditions are favorable to produce tornadoes.

A Tornado Warning is issued by meteorologists when a tornado has been spotted on the ground.

What to do before a tornado hits

Watch for any strong rotation in the cloud base. Watch for whirling debris or dust on the ground. Watch for hail of any size followed by calmness of a storm. Listen for a rumbling sound as deafening as a freight train up close. Make sure to have a plan in case one hits your area. Emergency kits and communications are a must in case of a tornado. Make sure to practice how and where you go in case one hits.

Where to go for safety when a tornado hits land near you.

Basements are the best option in case of a tornado. If there is no basement to go to then the next best thing is in the direct middle of the house away from windows. If you are in a high building the best place to go is in the middle of the lowest floor away from windows. Never try to sit out a tornado in a car, under a bridge, or in a mobile home. Take shelter in a ditch or low area.

What to do after a tornado hits

The best thing to do after a tornado is to remain calm and do not go into any heavily damaged buildings or structures. Administer first aid or try to find help. Go to a shelter in your area if you need a place to stay as well as getting any useful aid.
