Dear Dr. Gudayol:

This is in response to your e-mail message of October 31, 2001, and the complaint that you lodged with the AMS Committee on Professional Ethics (COPE). I have circulated your message to all members of our committee.

As you know, your complaint is related to actions taken by the IMU in regard to their decisions relating to the award of the 1998 Fields Medals. This matter falls outside our purview as the AMS cannot take responsibility for the practices of the IMU. Consequently our committee has decided that it will not take any action in this case.

Sincerely,
John C. Meakin,
Chair, AMS Committee on Professional Ethics
