Although some of these individuals aren't my favorite musicians, I feel their contributions to the art has drastically shaken the foundation of what we consider rock music.
I feel these select few deserve the label:

Musical Genius
The late Kurt Cobain
Kurt Cobain was not only a revered musical genius, but a great poet.  Here is his last composition, a suicide note.
Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins
Although I'm not a big fan of the Smashing Pumpkins, I'd like to point out that the genius of Billy Corgan is in his vision.  He always knew what he wanted and he always struggled to obtain perfection.
Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin
Jimmy Page
I don't have to say much about the man who, on his job resume, can truly say "I wrote 'Stairway to Heaven.'"
You can hate Marilyn Manson and NIN's Trent Reznor all you want, but the music world would become stagnant and dull if no one ever pushed the line and occasionally crossed it.
Besides, I know you wish you could tell everbody
'I want to fuck you like an animal.'
Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor
Shock rocker Marilyn Manson

Axl Rose in the Early Days of Guns n' Roses
There is no doubting that Axl Rose is one of the biggest son of a bitches in the industry. The beautiful part is that he doesn't care. The Guns n' Roses frontman arrived in L.A. a determined young man from small town Indiana and the rest is history. He's probably the most driven person on Earth, but he's also in the running for being one of the most angry.
Axl Rose in the Present
If all you've ever heard by Queen is "We Will Rock You," and "We Are the Champions," then you probably don't recognize their tremendous talent.
Others, however, recognize that Freddie Mercury was put on this Earth for one purpose:  to sing.
The late Freddie Mercury
Brian May never relied on flashy guitar solos.  Instead, he played the right note every single note.  His solos are perfect.
In the early '90s, the late '80s big-hair bands were still clutching the glam rock scene.  It was a dark day for rock -- grunge and alternative music was taking over.  Then, like a shining beacon, a new hero emerged in Tool, and heavy metal received a life-giving breathe.
More to come later.

Send me E-mail on who you think falls into this category and I might put them up here.  Just don't E-mail me professing the talent of, say, Sisqo.
