Try this out with your class and let me know how they like it. It is truly a game that makes them think. My kids love it!
Note to the teacher:
This game can be played on the chalkboard or overhead. Only the teacher does the marking (unless you have a child be the teacher after they have learned to play).

Rules:
1) There is absolutely no talking unless it is your turn.
2) A number can only be used once in any given response (ex. 646 is not a legal guess since the 6 has been used twice).
3) A "cow" is a correct # in the wrong place (i.e., use this # in another location).
4) A "bull" is a correct # in the correct place (don't change or move it).

Divide the class into two teams. Each team member gets a chance to guess the number (when it is their turn). The teacher chooses a 3 digit number (which only she/he knows) EXAMPLE: 542 (Teacher keeps this number hidden and only she/he knows what it is.)

Example of game:
Team 1----Player Pat-- guesses 495-- teacher writes the guess on the board and next to it writes "2C" (there are 2 correct #s in the wrong places).

Team 2---Player Gabi---guesses 651-- teacher writes the guess on the board and next to it writes "1C" (there is 1 correct number in the wrong place).

Team 1---Player Matt---guesses 572-- teacher writes the guess on the board and next to it writes "2B" (there are 2 correct #s in the correct places).

Team 2---Player Joe----guesses 521-- teacher writes the guess on the board and next to it writes "1B1C" (there is 1 # in the correct place & 1 # that needs to be moved).

Team 3---Player Emma---guesses 542-- teacher writes the guess on the board and next to it writes "3B" (all are correct).

Team 1 gets a point, teacher chooses a new number and the next member of team 2 gets to guess first.
