| Dr. Tim Cowles and his PhD graduate student Malinda Sutor are interested to study small-scale planktonic structure in the ocean and understand the persistence and trophic consequences of these structures (Cowles et al. 1998). See their research webpage. Recent observations suggest that estimates of biological rate processes obtained in coarser-scale conventional sampling (e.g. ~5-10 m bottle spacing) may have missed the contribution of persistent sub-1-m scale structure. Cowles et al (1990), Cowles et al. (1993), Desideiro et al. (1993) demonstrated that vertical patterns of phytoplankton pigment fluorescence often have local maxima within narrow layers (10-50 cm in thickness), They are interested to detect small-scale vertical distribution of bacteria, phytoplankton, micro- and macrozooplankton in the Oregon coast. Bacteria will be studied by another COAS PhD graduate student Krista Longnecker This summer we going to get samples throughout the water column using a zooplankton pump and recording several environmental conditions with a CTD, Wet-star fluorometer, AC9, ADV (acoustic doppler velocity meter), and the TAPS acoustical instrument. They gave me the opportunity to get zooplankton samples with their new zooplankton pump. I'm going to obtain vertical samples of euphausiids over the continental shelf of Oregon. My main goal is to estimate the abundance and vertical distribution of the different developmental stages of the euphausiid's eggs and early larval stages to estimate mortality rates in the field. |

| The pump was adapted by Tim and Malinda. They are sampling water and filtering it with a 70 micron mesh-net to obtain microzooplankton. During the first test of the equipment last May 7th, 2001 we obtained zooplankton samples at nine depths. |
| The remote sensing instrumentation is pretty heavy and this must be load on R/V Elakha using a big crane at the OSU pier. |
