The Cell Cycle

Introduction | Invitation | Exploration | Explanation | Taking Action | Conclusion

Introduction
In this web-based lesson, you will investigate the process of mitosis within the cell cycle.  You will search for general background information and labeled diagrams on the internet for each mitotic phase, including prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and cytokinesis.  Once all the information is gathered, you will share it within small group and classroom discussions.  Lastly, you will design two-dimensional paper cell models of each mitotic phase.

Objectives

  • The students will explain the events of mitosis in animal and plant cells.
  • The students will design two-dimensional paper cell models of each phase in mitosis.

Materials

  • Material you will need:  computer with internet access, notebook paper, poster paper, markers, ruler, yarn, scissors, tape, glue, buttons, and seeds

Invitation

  • Using one piece of white poster paper and a variety of colored markers, draw  and color in a picture of what you imagine cells have inside of them.  Then draw the process of how you think your cell reproduces or creates other cells.

Exploration
1.  Using netscape navigator or internet explorer on your computer, type in the below website addresses on mitosis.

2.  Read the information on each site and take notes on the events that occur in the phases of mitosis, including prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and cytokinesis.  Be sure to print the information from each website.

3.  Write one summary paragraph of how animal and plant cells reproduce by mitosis.

Explanation
 1. THINK - Organize your notes into the below chhart on your own piece of notebook paper.  Read the notes and be able to explain them to other classmates.

                                Mitosis

Task:_______________________________________________________________________

Key Questions

Findings

 1.  What are the major events in prophase?

2.  What are the major events in metaphase?

3.  What are the major events in anaphase?

4.  What are the major events in telophase?

5.  What are the major events in cytokinesis?

  • 2.  PAIR - Compare the information in your chart with another classmate that is assigned to you by the teacher.  Correct or add any necessary information.
  • 3.  SHARE - The teacher will call upon one member of each pair to share the information discussed in the chart with the rest of the class.

Taking Action

  • 1.  Obtain the materials listed above from the teacher.
  • 2.  Design five cells on your poster paper representing each of the phases in mitosis, including prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and cytokinesis.
  • 3.  Use the markers to outline your cells and label the parts.  Use the different colored yarn to represent your chromosomes, asters, and spindle fibers.  Use the buttons or seeds to represent the centromeres.
  • 4.  Title each cell with its appropriate phase.
  • 5.  Label the following parts:  chromosomes, chromatids, centromeres, spindle fibers, asters, centrioles, cytoplasm, cell membrane, and nucleus.
  • 6.  Write a caption underneath each cell highlighting the major event of the phase.

Conclusion

Mitosis is a portion of the cell cycle in which cells reproduce themselves.  This process includes five phases, including prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and cytokinesis.
