| Reactive Depression aetiologically differs from the other depressive phenomena , such as Major Depression. Reactive Depression is caused entirely by environmental factors (stress, protracted duress, psychosocial factors, traumatic experiences), whereas other depression-related units are caused by endogenous factors, mainly neurohormonal imbalance (although stressors usually also contribute to the onset) . This fact has important implications for treatment approaches: Reactive Depression is resistant to any psychopharmacological treatments for the above mentioned reason. Therefore the proper treatment should be based on socio-psychological approach (reduction or elimination of stress factors from the life or from the environment of the affected individuals). Reactive Depression frequently follows Stress Breakdown, and may be considered a chronic development, following the acute phase of stress breakdown. |
