In July of 1745 John was apprenticed to Zachariah Field to learn the gunsmith trade. On October 25, 1754 John was mustered into Capt. John Hicks company in Col. John Starkey's Regt. of Foot for service in the French and Indian War.

John Heidelberg was in Onslow militia: A Muster Roll of Forces retaken at Henry Rhodes on Friday the 25th of October 1754. To serve as Militia in A Regiment of Foot commanded by the Honerable Colonel John Starkey, Esq. In Captain Thos. Hicks own Company.
John married Catherine McClammy, daughter of Thomas McClammy Jr. and Mary Manlove, about 1747 in NC. (Catherine McClammy was born about 1730 in NC.)
