(Note that the assumption that Joshia's parents were William Turnage is based on the research of Robert E. Woodham. Ref: FGR 0887, family notes compiled and furnished by Ida (Worthington) Watson, of Charlotte, NC, 1/14/1996. Birth date found in this reference. Ada wrote that the notes were copies from Josiah's Bible, which is at this time in the possession of Bill Worthington, Kinston, NC.
Deed: Ref Vol IV, (1817-1832) Index & Abstracts of Deeds of Record, Pitt Co., NC. Deed BK EE (1826-1832), Pg 223, 16 Feb 1828, Josiah Turnage (Greene Co), bought 18-3/4 acres $37.75. Witness: Wilks Brooks & Thomas Weatherington.
Ref: FGR 0887, Personal Data Sheet for Josiah Turnage, printed 1/24/1996 by descendant, Ada (Worthington) Watson, Charlotte, NC. for the following excerpts and notes from Josiah Turnage's Bible, which is presently in possession of Bill Worthington, of Kinston, NC. (1996). Ada added "when my great grandfather William Thomas Worthington entered the Civil War, his name was spelled Wetherington. He apparently could not write and made his mark. When he signed the Oath of Allegiance at the end of the war, he signed it, W. T. Worthington".
Inscription: "Josiah Turnage, his Book, bot (bought) at new Berne for five dollars $.70 year 1827". (There is other writing on the page, but it is too light and worn to read.).
