How-to: I used denatured alcohol as the fuel in a standard alcohol lamp from a child's chemistry set. I think that plain ethanol or methanol would also work, as would a tiki torch or hurricane lamp (but I haven't tried these yet). Denatured alcohol --Get this at Home Depot or Lowes. It's also used in marine stoves Boric acid --Small quantities available online (1, 2) Borax is supposed to work also, but I've not tried this.
I added only 5 or 6 tiny scoops of boric acid to 2 ounces of alcohol. It dissolves easily with a little stirring.
This is the resulting flame, seen with the lights on. It's much more impressive in the dark, as seen in the picture at the top of this page. The 2 ounces or so of alcohol in this lamp burned for about 15 minutes.
