Artist's Statement
This year my work has concentrated on the concept of escaping civilazation. My work is all based on social statements, but it has departed from mockeries of American culture. My past work mimicked modern life, often through cave paintings, by reducing components of society into its simplest terms. It now focuses on the primal, inherent instincts that still exist in the industrial city. Much of this work, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, and a short claymation film, is focused on a character I have developed. This slender figure, highly influenced by Giacometti, Klee, and Basquiat, lives in the filthy city with a television as his only companion. With a stethoscope on his heart and headphones around his ears, he carries a strong desire to escape the great machine. He then lives in a post-social state in the forest among the discarded junk of the city, as that is what he has become.

Presently, I have been trying to compare the primitive man to the derelict. I have believed for a long time that the wandering homeless are the only humans left on earth. I have also been working more towards abstract paintings, attempting to capture the mood of the green forest and brick-red city. Also, I am currently putting together a second film,
derelict. This movie is similar to the first, in that the main character carries headphones, and eventually escapes to nature at the end. However, the character in derelict is born in nature, as he was meant to be. Only when he discovers a love in technology and music does he enter society, moving deeper into the compressed city.

I have always believed that there are links between
audio and visual art, as certain images are associated in my mind with certain sounds, and visa versa. I therefore have always incorperated audio components into some of my works, including Headphones, Compressed Cube, Cocoon, and both of my films. Also, I also make music independent from a piece of visual art. I record music and sound digitally on my computer, using recording and editing software and a pre-amp. Common components in my music are the bass guitar, piano, and mechanical drums, as well as several instruments I have built.
