Radiator Support Brace Installation
This is a pic of the brace laying on the garage floor.
Things you will need: 19 mm open end wrench (a 3/4" wrench is fine if you only have a SAE set) 19 mm socket wrench (a 3/4" socket is fine if you only have a SAE set) penetrating oil (WD-40) Wire brush (to clean threads) At least two hands About 20-30 minutes NOTE: If your car does not have the bars that run from the crossmember to the framerails, then you will also need the nuts, bolts and washers from the donor car.
1. Jack up the car, and place it on jackstands to remove weight from the front wheels/suspension. 2. Grab your favorite penetrating oil and shoot some at the threads. 3. Take your open end wrench & stick it through the hole in the framerail and place it on the top of the bolt. 4. Then take the socket, put it on the nut. 5. While holding the open end wrench stationary, rotate the socket wrench counterclockwise. 6. Repeat the same way for the opposite side. 7. Take some lubricating oil and spray some on the nuts and bolts and scrub with a wire brush. 8. Take the nuts and place them back in their original holes after thread cleaning. 9. Take the bar and position it with the bends toward the crossmember. (In other words, if you are looking at the bar with your head towards the front of the car, it should look the same as the picture.) NOTE: It DOES NOT make a difference which side gets the circle hole or elongated hole! 9. While holding it in place (or have a friend/child/wife), thread lightly the nut and washer back onto the bolt while you hold the bolt down. (It will be easier if you do the circle hole first.) 10. Then thread lightly the other nut and washer onto the other nut in the elongated slot. 11. Now tighten both nuts while holding the bolt as described above. 12. Take the car off jackstands, testdrive, and note improvement. (Oh, and send $$$ to me !!!) 13. OPTIONAL: You might want to check back on the bolts just to make sure they haven't backed off since their isn't a whole lot of thread engagement. Mine haven't yet. Or if you are worried, you can go to the hardware store and buy longer bolts, but I was too cheap.
NOTE: I also recommend installing the braces from the front crossmember to the frame rails, the braces that run underhood from the fender to the upper radiator support, and also the crossbraces in the trunk (if not equipped). As an aside, at this time you can also tighten up the feel of your steering by removing the slop in the preload of the gears in the steering box.
This mod should be considered mandatory for any T-Top car !!!
NOTE: These bars can be found on assorted G-bodies from 78-87, especially 82-87 GP's.
