Through the written word, Shakespeare has been able to give each individual character in Romeo and Juliet, their very own personality. For example, Romeo may be viewed as a shy, yet determined character, while his counterpart, Mercutio was outspoken and flamboyant. When I think about the Juliet's characteristics, I often conclude that she is a sweet and innocent young lady who is waiting for "Mr. Right." Surprisingly, many people from Victorian times had different views of Juliet. In fact, in her famous soliloquy in act 3, scene 2, a lot of theater-goers found this speech embarrassingly sexual. For this assignment, I would like you to begin by reviewing this speech (click on Juliet to view). After you have looked at this, please write a short essay on why/how some people may have felt this way...what words and/or sentences may have led them to think this, and how do you think that she should be presented. After this is completed, it is time for you to become the director! How do you view Juliet? Did Baz Luhrman portray her well with Claire Danes? I would like for you to equate her with one (or more) of your favorite actresses today. Once you have concluded how you will go about recreating Juliet, I would like you to do just that! Using the internet, I would like you to look up different images...they can be of actresses, models, female athletes, etc. Give your new Juliet a makeover.. Do you think she should be conservative, sexy, rebellious? Whatever figure that you come up with, I would like you to print out the different images and "put her together" with scissors and some glue. For example, you may want to put Julia Roberts' face with Cindy Crawfords' hair. You can dress her in a full-bodied dress, or a mini-skirt...just make sure that she meets the same standards of how you described her in your essay. Welcome to the director's studio...ENJOY!! |
