Monday night Alex was out of town and Shawn was working late, so Cynthia and I got to feed the girls supper and put them to bed. Once in their cribs they want to make sure that we will be downstairs: "Nana stay, Gege stay?"
We assured them we would be downstairs, kissed them and went down stairs. Putting them to bed was fairly uneventful, but the 45 minutes after that were our payment for baby sitting.
Just because they have been put to bed does not mean they are sleepy. It certainly does not assure that they will drift quietly off to sleep. Remember, they are twins and "sleep" in the same room.
That's not all they do there.
Sing. Every song they've heard at Gymboree, from Sesame Street, from Telletubies, from Kipper the Dog. From Nana. And some from God knows where: Where, pray tell, did a two and a half year old kid learn all the words to John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith?
In between song sets, they would chatter about the day's events, and last week's events. Then they would practice their rhythms: One sets the pattern: Ba Ba Bah Ba. Then "Ba Ba Bah Ba." comes echoing from the other crib. "Very good, Savannah," Ainsley would say. "Now try this one: Bah Bah BAH ba ba."
And every so often, they would plot:
"You throw the beanie baby."
"It's on the floor."
"Which one are we calling, Nana or Gege?"
"Nana."
"No, Gege."
"Okay, Gege."
Followed by a chorus of Gege's.
The Little Darlings know there is a baby monitor in the room and they know we are listing and they want to make sure we are still down stairs. We go up and show the flag and they are reassured and slowly quiet down.
Just before they drift off to sleep we hear Ainsley announce: "Nana has large mouth." To which Savannah replied, "Gege's is big, too."
G'night.
