My father, Wesley Russell Sholl, with his sister Marjorie Ella Sholl (later, Mrs. James Galloway); taken about 1923. Aunt Marge and Uncle Jim had four children, Linda Susan, Lois and James.
I didn't know Dad wore glasses as a child. He never wore them as an adult until late in his life.
This is George Sholl, brother to Leslie C. Sholl, my paternal grandfather, and his wife, Edna Peacock Sholl (from Jersey City, NJ).Thanks Aunt Edy!I think that's a Ford "Model T" in the background on the left.
My aunt, Edith Winifred Sholl, my dad's sister (born 2/6/23 on dad's birthday - he got to name her and of course named her after his mom); later Edy became Mrs. Vincent "Jimmy" Sapone; now, Mrs. Fred Darke of Palm Bay, Florida. Aunt Edy and Uncle "Jimmy" (Vincent Sapone, Sr.) had five children: Betty Jane, Mary, Patricia, Fran, and Vincent."Aunt Edy" is my "family treasure", and the poet whose work you read on some of my pages.
Dad (in front) with his sisters, and others, taken in 1928. Standing directly behind my dad is his older sister Muriel Sholl, b. July 16, 1913; she later became Mrs. Edward Soernson; they had no children; Uncle Ed died in the 70's). Aunt "Mu" spoiled all of the nieces and nephews - I remember her taking us to see our first Broadway Play - Booth Tarkington's "Seventeen" - she bought us gardenias to wear on our coats - I'll never forget their perfume!
Directly to dad's left is his next older sister, Ethel Louisa Sholl (born March 19, 1911, died Dec., 1968).Ethel married Raymond Walters, and had five sons:Raymond, Curtis, Russell Eugene & Warren (twins), and Donald. Uncle Ray worked for Con Ed on Staten Island, and was killed (electrocuted) in a fall from a pole in 1950, as a live wire struck him on the way down. Aunt Ethel passed on in 1968, after caring for her Mom, at home, (Edith Mary Straut Sholl) before Nana's death.I particularly remember Aunt Ethel's first television set. It had a huge magnifying glass braced to the front of it - an accessory anyone could buy then, perhaps 4" thick.Nana's bed was in the living room so she could enjoy it too.
"Harry, Ray, Uncle Sid, Eddie", Coaldale Colliery, Coaldale, Schyulkill County, Pennsylvania, August, 1936". Ray is my uncle, Raymond Walters (married Ethel, my father's sister); Uncle Sid is Sidney F. Straut, my maternal grandmother's brother; Eddie is my uncle Eddie Soernson (married Muriel Sholl, my father's sister). They were tourists at the mine.
