Threnody
A song of Lament
Soldier marching into battle
Stripes and pins upon his breast
Take away his stripes and pins
And he's just like all the rest

Soldier marching out of battle
Gleaming medal for bravery in attack
Take away that gleaming medal
For it won't bring his casualties back

Why can't the sky just crumble
And fall as the thunder rumbles?
And rain pours unto the grave
Of one, in dying, was not so brave

Maybe I am nothing here
But why do you desert me?
The tide and wind that I hold dear
And nothing more can hurt me
Pausing every moonlit hour
Hearing every step I take
Withering, my denial a flower
Haunting every move I make

Why can't I make you listen?
Feel the night on the windowpane
See the tear's in a mother's eyes glisten
As all my insights seem to drain

Why can't the sky just crumble
And fall as the thunder rumbles?
And rain pours unto the grave
Of one, in dying, was not so brave

-Kelly M. Kincaid September 1994
Try to put the darkness behind me
Try to find a stake that burns
Try to find the fire that leads me
To a world that never turns
Flying through the turbulent future
To see the past behind stoned eyes
Try to pass the grid of confusion
But they only tell us lies

Why can't the sky just crumble
And fall as the thunder rumbles?
And rain pours unto the grave
Of one, in dying, was not so brave

Trying to shake doubts in my head
And leave them all behind me
Cease and kill the restless dead
The moon feels so empty
Wickedness in useless wars
Surround you ever after
Useless sands on useless shores
Drenched in blood and enemy's loathsome laughter

Why can't I just find a place
Where I can be alone again?
Reaching out through timeless darkness
Knowing of my dying sin
People scream, "God help me please!"
And fall down on their knees
God reaches out a hand to them
But no one really sees
This will forever be one of my own personal favorites.  Another poem about war and the senselessness behind it.  I'd seriously like to make this into a song someday.
