It certainly has a ring of truth about it, but I believe that when your right to have a religion hangs in the balance, we have no choice but to mix politics and religion.
I agree completely with separation of Church and State--theocracies interfere with personal freedom, and in the end, an inch of personal freedom is all we have. Politics and state are different things, however. Politics are what's going on, the changes that are being made or not being made. State is what's in place--the rules, the authority.
Every state should grant personal freedoms as a basic right, among them freedom of religion--and freedom from religion. When I fight for my right to wear my pentacle without getting beaten to death for it, I bring my religion into my politics. It's unavoidable.
I do not condone the shoving of one's beliefs onto others--if I wanted to hear your proselytizing, I'd ask for it. Nor do I think it's right to tell people they're dammned for eternity if they continue on their chosen path. Even if you believe that, it's rude to say so--not to mention arrogant. Each person needs to figure stuff out on his own. Telling him what's right or wrong or what to believe won't help him--it'll just anger him, or brainwash him. No two paths are the same.
I've managed to reconcile my fierce politics with my hate of proselytization. It's actually quite simple: I fight for freedom of all religions, and I don't tell people more about my religion than I need to. All I need to say is this: "It is my right as a human being to enjoy my own religion, and whether or not you believe it as valid is of no matter. What matters is that I believe it, and I should have the right to believe it. Just as you have the right to practice the religion you do, regardless what I think."
This holds true no matter who you are, what you believe, where you live, or what you think of other religions--everyone has the right to personal freedoms. Even if most countries in the world don't grant these freedoms, I have to believe they will someday. Even if it means going thru a Norsefire state first, I will remember the fifth.
