Torah of the Shearith Israel Congregation, end of the seventeenth century Dating back to the seventeenth century, this copy of the Torah was presented to the Jewish community of Montreal in 1768 by friends in London, England. It was used for services for over two centuries in the Montreal synagogue, the oldest in Canada. Rolled around two wands, the parchment bears the text of the first five books of the Bible, the Pentateuch, which was copied by hand according to strict rites. The Shearith Israel Congregation authorized the showing of this extraordinary manuscript. (C-108964)
