Reconciliation Lois and Ned return from a gig and Lois busies herself unpacking the clothes on the bed… Ned: "What are you doing?" Lois: "Unpacking…" Ned: "But it’s the middle of the night." Lois: "Yea...but if these things stay crammed in here they’re gonna be a mass of wrinkles in the morning." Ned: "Uh huh and this way the bed is occupied. (He sits down on the clothes covered bed.) What happened to living in the moment?" Lois: "Uh well the moment sneaked up on me a little faster than I expected." Ned: "Maybe that’s how we know it’s right…when it’s not planned. (He pulls her around the bed and sits her next to him.) No candles, no romantic music, not breathtaking scenery to seduce us…no stimulus of any kind…except what really counts…you and me…together…(moving in closer)…with the rest of the night ahead of us." Lois: "But Brenda…" Ned: "…will take care of herself. (Pulling her closer) the time has come (kisses her) for love to take it’s course." (They fall back on the bed kissing.)
Lois: (pulling away) "Umm let me freshen up." Ned: (He pulls her back down) "I’m kinda partial to road dust." Lois: (in between kisses) "Just five minutes…ok…"
Ned: "Five minutes…(Lois gets up and they both smile at each other.) I’ll be waiting." Lois: "Bye." Ned: "Bye." Lois goes into the bathroom and Ned busies himself cleaning off the bed and writing Brenda a note telling her to enjoy her night on the couch, which he puts on the bedroom door. Lois is in the bathroom fixing herself up.
Lois: (looking in the mirror) "What in the name of the saints am I doing?"
Lois rushes over and locks the bathroom door.
While lighting candles Ned hears the door lock and walks over (shirtless and bare foot) to check the door…knocking frequently.
Ned: "Lois? Everything alright? Lois? Something wrong? You ok? Lois? Say something…Lois can you hear me? Please open this door." Lois: "I can’t."
Ned: "Lois what’s wrong?"
Lois: "I’m havin’ trouble breathin’." Ned: "Lois that’s just panic." Lois: "Just panic?" Ned: "Yes! I’m terrified too." Lois: "No you’re not." Ned: "Yes I am…my heart’s racing, my palms are sweaty, I’m sure my eyes are dilated…why don’t you open the door and check?" Lois: "You said you’ve never been more sure of anything in your whole entire life…you said that!"
Ned: "Sure I’m sure…but that’s exactly why I’m terrified…cause I know how important this is. We’re not just a couple of kids jumpin’ into bed…" Lois: "Yea that would be the easy part." Ned: "Right! I mean the first time we sorta just let nature take it’s course…but this time we’re being responsible mature married people. This is a commitment. I mean this is like our real wedding night…we have worked hard towards this moment. And I think we’re ready…I know we’re ready." Lois: "Speak for yourself!" Ned: "Alright…I will." (Sitting on his knees he takes his hand and rubs the bathroom door...)
Ned: "Lois Marie…I Edward Laurence Ashton do solemnly swear to love honor and protect you from this day forward…for better or worse, for richer or poorer in sickness and in health and to be faithful to you ‘til death do us part. I vow never to lie to you knowingly, never to violate your trust and I intend to spend the rest of my days proving my love in a dazzling variety of creative ways that will make your head spin. And if, as I hope to succeed in making you love me more than you did before, more than you ever dreamed possible, even then you won't love me one-tenth as much as I love you."
Lois: "Just keep talkin', okay?" Ned: "Lois, as I see it, we can play this one of three ways. You can stay in this bathroom all night long and I'll stay right out here and if you trust me long enough to open this door, I can hand you a pillow and a blanket and you can sleep in the tub. Not that either of us will get any sleep anyway. Or I can leave, but I don't think that either one of us will get a decent night's rest. In fact the only way I see either one of us getting any rest is for you to open this door and let me love you the way you deserve to be loved. The way I'm prepared to love you. And then I'll hold you in my arms and rock you to sleep. In the morning when we wake, I'll go on loving you for the rest of our lives...Lois?...Sweetheart?"
Lois: "You are a silver-tounged devil, aren't you?"
Ned: "Every word was from my heart."
Lois: "Just don't make me regret this, okay?"
Ned: "Never." |
