In Japanese this variety is called tagyoushou ("many-form pine", probably a reference to its multi-trunk habit) but in English tanyosho, due to a long-forgotten transliteration error. Also known as table top pine or red umbrella pine. The former refers to the tendency to develop a flat top, although this specimen is more pyramidal.
