The "Dragon" Island
Plants included 'black dragon' Japanese cedar (cryptomeria), 'red dragon' Japanese maple (see the theme?), 'San Jose' Chinese juniper and 'hino crimson' azaleas (looking drab right now because they are out of bloom). Lurking behind the big rock is a Japanese painted fern , and along the back is a row of 'visions' Chinese astilbe.

The idea was that once the two dragons grew in, the effect would be one of the red "claws" of the maple dangling down from the "body" and "head" formed by the cryptomeria.  Alas, the maple died from a late freeze in spring 2006, and the cryptomeria is looking shabby from too much exposure to winter winds.
