| The Avro York first flew in July 1942, but did not enter service until after the end of World War II, as the UK had been relying on American transports during the war. Based on the Lancaster bomber, the York was a 'safe' buy, as most of the technology used by the aircraft was well tested & service proven. On the third York prototype, the Lancaster-type tail was supplemented by a third vertical tail surface. This became standard on all of the 253 production York C.Mk1s, the first of which entered service in 1945. The York C.Mk1 equipped nine Transport Command squadrons & was produced in three versions; all-passenger, all-freight & mixed passenger/freight. The York began to leave service when the Hastings was introduced, but was not totally removed from service until 1957. | ||
