| The Whirlwind was a general purpose civil & military helicopter, & was powered by a single 600hp Pratt & Whitney R-1340 9-cylinder air cooled radial engine in the nose, driving the main rotor gearbox with a sloping shaft. The Whirlwind had a three-blade all-metal main rotor with a diameter of 53ft & a two-blade anti-torque rotor with a diameter of 8ft 11in. It was designated Whirlwind HAR.10 in RAF service, & was 62ft 1.5in long, 45ft 9.5in wide & 13ft 3in high. The Whirlwind weighed 7,500lbs, & could reach a maximum speed of 109mph. | ||
