The V-Bombers were the last of the RAF's long-range heavy bombers. Designed as Britain's nuclear deterrent, the V-Bombers were long-range jets able to carry either a single nuclear missile or a large conventional warload from the UK to Moscow, without IFR. The V-Bombers represented a major leap forward in airframe technology, with both the Vulcan & Victor having unusual wing shapes for the time. The nuclear deterrent was moved to the Royal Navy in the form of Trident missiles carried by submarines. The V-Bombers became conventional bombers & tankers & also filled some other roles towards the end of their service life. |
