Designed as a military version of the Viking airliner, the Vickers Valetta featured large loading doors, a strengthened floor, revised landing gear, an altered fuel system & new Bristol Hercules Mk230 radial engines. The first production Valetta C.Mk1 (213 built) flew in January 1948, & the type was used for paradropping, airdropping, freighting, casevac & glider-towing. After the C.Mk1 came the C.Mk2 15-passenger VIP transport (10 built) & Valetta T.Mk3 navigation trainer (40 built). The T.Mk4 had a row of astrodomes above the fuselage. Eighteen were later modified to Valetta T.Mk4 radar trainer standard. The Valetta served with 13 squadrons (four in the UK, six in the Middle East & three in the Far East) & left service in December 1966.
