The Twin Pioneer was a twin-engine development of the Pioneer. It first flew in June 1955 as a 16 passenger civil transport. The RAF ordered 20 Twin Pioneer CC.Mk1s in 1956. The order was later increased to 39 aircraft, & the last seven were delivered as Twin Pioneer CC.Mk2s. The last three of these CC.Mk2s had 477kW (640hp) Leonides Mk531 engines. The Twin Pioneer had the same type of STOL performance as the Pioneer CC.Mk2, needing only a 275m (300 yards) long & 30.5m (100ft) wide airstrip for safe take-off & landing. Seven squadrons used the aircraft, which was retired in 1968. Twin Pioneers served with civil or military services in 15 different countries, as well as with the the RAF.
