The Supermarine Swift was the RAF's first swept-wing jet fighter, but left service as a day fighter after only 15 months due to severe technical problems. The Swift equipped only one squadron (No.56) as the F.Mk1, & entered service in February 1954. Examples of F.Mk2, F.Mk3 & F.Mk4 aircraft also served with the squadron, featuring improvements such as an all-flying tail, afterburners & a four-gun armament. When it became clear that the Swift's problems could not be solved, No.56 Squadron converted back to the Meteor in May 1955. The Swift's time as a fighter was over, but the later F.Mk5 fighter-reconnaissance aircraft served with RAF Germany until 1961. A small number of the F.Mk7 variant was used by the Guided Weapon Development Squadron at RAF Valley for missile trials.
